Process versus outcome is not a new concept but it is one we often lose sight of especially in modern society where the quick fix and instant dopamine are the desired norm. Simply put we often focus on the outcome of a situation rather than the process and we then become bogged down with insecurities which can lead to the development of mental health symptoms.
Think of weight loss and body building as an example, how often do we see promotions, ads and social media posts about someone with an extremely attractive body? Too often. But how often do we see the same exposure to the process of that person not just getting to that stage but maintaining that figure? Rarely.
If your goal is to have the super fit body, to be a high end performer in the arts or whatever your goals may be then it would be wise to shift your focus to the process rather than the outcome. We know the outcome that occurs when following the correct process so dedicating the time and effort into the process itself will yield the outcome you desire.
This idea has been around in the sports science/coaching community for decades and it is something that has always been present in many martial arts – mastery comes from practicing the basics continuously until they become effortless; comparing your present state to someone else’s outcome is a recipe for disaster. Look to their process, absolutely, and learn from it but never compare.
A final note is that social media is designed to show you the highlight reels of every users’ life and people often compare that to their own blooper reel; it is a catered experience and not a healthy one so limit your exposure or understand that comparison in this area is not beneficial at all.
