As we enter the season of common colds I wanted to share this simple ginger tea recipe with you. It can be used when you notice you’ve caught a cold (chills, stuffy nose, clear-white phlegm) or if you are experiencing early stages of food poisoning.
Step One – Gather the ingredients and tools; you’ll need a standard coffee cup, knife, something to cover your cup, 250 ml of boiling water, knob of ginger (roughly thumb sized) and a black tea teabag.

Step Two – Skin the ginger and slice into smaller circles, thickness of a 20c coin is good; lay the knife flat on the sliced ginger and slam down on the knife blade (as though you were crushing garlic), this can also be achieved with a mortar and pestle if you don’t mind more clean up.

Step Three – add the sliced ginger and black tea teabag to the coffee cup then fill it with boiling water before covering the cup; you can add half a teaspoon of honey before covering the cup if you find the flavor of ginger generally overpowering.

Step Four: Let it sit for about 15 minutes and when you remove the cover it should be quite aromatic, sip slowly until done. You can refill the cup with boiling water and a new tea bag two more times on the same day but DO NOT add or change our the ginger – leave a minimum 2 hour time gap before refilling; continue until symptoms subside.
Remember you can add a little honey at step three if you find ginger overpowering or dislike the flavor. No, you will not get the same effect from a ginger tea teabag and no, you cannot use a different tea (green etc) as black tea is neutral and is merely helping ease the flavor of ginger; you can actually opt out of using a teabag completely if you like the taste of ginger.
This simple remedy can also be used for assist with any nausea though pregnant women should use it with caution. If you are using it for common cold and you start to develop a sore throat or the color of your phlegm changes to yellow/green then discontinue immediately; seek out a medical practitioner if your symptoms do not improve or progress.
